Fashion Designer Makes 160 Ft Long Shirt |
2003-10-8
Raghavendra Rathore, India''s budding designer, who is also a prince-ling, has come out with a 160 ft long shirt with an eye on Guinness Book of World Records.
With his khaki-coloured creation, the couturier is attempting to get into the Guinness Book of World Records. Made of 5,000 meters of the finest cotton, the shirt has 15 buttons, each with a diameter of 20-35 inches.
Famed for re-interpreting his regal heritage and effortlessly mingling it with Manhattan sensibilities, Rathore, from one of the world''s oldest royal houses of Jodhpur in Rajasthan, said he wanted to break a few barriers with his new shirt.
"The idea was to do something really big," Rathore told IANS before the shirt was to be unveiled at Delhi''s The Metropolitan, Hotel Nikko on Sunday night.
"Something that could make a real mark," said Rathore, "and stand for the gigantic aims of Indian fashion."
The idea was also to celebrate the recent merger of Rathore and Vishal Singh of Orient Craft, one of the country''s biggest handicraft exporters. The merger has strengthened Inde Prêt, Jodhpur, Rathore''s prêt line. With wooden buttons, the shirt has the sharpness and slightly traditionally edgy style that defines Rathore''s work. Only he is able to bring a sense of New York glib edginess and mix it with the colourful ethnicity of his self-proclaimed small town Jodhpur roots.
The shirt, Rathore believes, would help surge the fame of his ready-to-wear label. "After all, a Guinness listing is a Guinness listing," he smiled.
The designer other label is his haute couture name "Rathore, Jodhpur".A graduate of India''s once-upon-a-time school for kings, Mayo College Ajmer, and then the Parsons School of Design in New York, Rathore is credited for creating his own coat-of-arms, with his own insignia for his couture brand.
The shirt is the latest effort by the man who trained under Bill Blass, Donna Karan and Oscar de la Renta and made the kingdom of Jodhpur his brand name.
