Textile Chiefs Win Tariff-Free Deal With Canada |
2003-10-8
Ethiopian trade chiefs were celebrating on Friday after securing lucrative tariff and quota free access for their textiles and clothing from their Canadian counterparts.
The deal is expected to give a welcome boost to the poverty-stricken African nation''s sewn goods industry which supplies local rather than international customers.
"Canada is pleased to grant Ethiopia such an initiative, which is hoped would help the country to develop and expand its textile industry," Canadian embassy spokesman Richard Le Bars was quoted as saying.
Ethiopia already benefits from duty free entry of textiles and apparel shipments to the US under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), although trade chiefs say the country has yet to exploit the act to its full potential.
