Spinning company Omikenshi Co has announced the development of a rayon fibre that emits a strong fragrance of grapefruit. This new fabric, different to those with fragrant capsules attached to the surfaces of its fibres, is produced using emulsified grapefruit extract.
The extract is mixed with the dissolved viscose solution from which the rayon fibres are spun, with the fragrance gradually emenating from small openings in the fibres.
While Omikenshi has reported a lack of durability of the fabric and a short life span for the fragrance, it aims to strengthen these elements and have commercial products made from the rayon material on the market in two years.
The company plans to use the scented fabric in producing clothing, sheets and sleepwear, with lavender and lemon varieties also in the pipeline.
