INDIA: Garment Exports Rise In May |

Indian exports of readymade garments to quota countries have increased 5.98 per cent year-on-year in quantity terms and 9.04 per cent year-on-year in value terms for the month of May. According to data compiled by the country’s Apparel Export Promotion Council, India exported 140.1 million pieces valued at US$546.4m for the month, up from 132.2m pieces valued at US$501.1m in the same period a year earlier. After a decline in May 2003, exports to the United States grew 5.35 per cent year-on-year in quantity terms to 59.1m pieces and 2.15 per cent year-on-year in value terms to US$251.5m for the month. Exports to the EU, meanwhile, rose 8.92 per cent year-on-year in quantity terms to 75.7m pieces and 18.94 per cent year-on-year in value terms to US$279.4m for the period.
