Europe tops as major importer of Egyptian cotton yarn |
2004-7-2
Cotton yarn exports crossed 41,284 tons in 2003 up 13.8% from 2002.
Europe topped as major importer of Egyptian cotton having more than 50 % share. Italy, Germany, Belgium were among those countries importing cotton from Egypt. USA was second region importing 30% of Egyptian cotton yarn.
Misr Spinning and Weaving Company (Public Sector) which is located in Mehalla El Kobra (MSWM) has the largest share of 32% taking the place of a world’s largest cotton yarn exporter from Egypt. However, private sector companies have also started playing a major role, was also very clear, as investments in the sector had gone up with the governmental textile privatisation program, leasing public sector spinning units or building newly spinning factories in the Free Zone areas.
The average yarn count of exported Egyptian cotton yarn to the EU region increased from 31NE in 1990 to 36NE in 2002, which proves that demand of EU countries, and in particular from Italy, was towards higher yarn counts. On the contrary the demand in the US region has shifted towards lower count Egyptian cotton yarn as it was 27NE in 1990 and it decreased to 17NE in 2002.
The EU imports increased in 2001 by 15% reaching 150,000 Tons and continued rising rapidly by 27% in 2002 to reach 191,000 Tons, then in 2003 it increased by 23% to be 246,000 Tons.
