Garment exporters get EU quotas |
2004-7-15
Some 70 garment companies have just received the new European Union textile import quota restrictions. Viet Nam is now authorised to export about 1.9 million textile products to the ten new EU members. The companies had submitted documents since June to the Ministry of Trade (MoT) to ask to be included in the EU quota. Inclusion in the quota grants individual garment companies the right to export textile products to European countries. The quotas cover six categories, including cat 4 (T-shirt, Polo-shirt), cat 5 (sweater), cat 6 (trousers), cat 7 (shirts for women), cat 8 (shirts for men), cat 15 (coats for women), cat 29 (female dresses) and cat 78 (clothes). The Ministry of Trade MoT expected the EU to officially declare its quota increase for Viet Nam’s clothing exports following its expansion of ten new members since May 1. The value of the quota growth for Viet Nam is expected to equal about US$180 million.According to the MoT, the EU permitted a textile quota increase by about 55-70 per cent this year over last year. These rising quotas are part of the EU’s commitment to Viet Nam as stipulated by the EU Textile and Garment Agreement signed last February. The MoT has continued to distribute the increased export quotas to registered enterprises. However, for best-selling products such as cat 5, cat 8, cat 15, and cat 78, the ministry only distributed quotas to companies who had export records last year.
