EU trade commissioner Pascal Lamy today termed the agreement by WTO negotiators meeting in Geneva this week to salvage trade liberalisation talks as "a positive sign for the world economy."
Beginning yesterday, the WTO general council began meeting in a bid to secure an agreement to resume the Doha round of trade talks by adopting a compromise submitted to the 147 WTO member countries by Japan.
"In the current phase, the frame of mind is rather positive. Everyone feels that we have an opportunity," Lamy told the European parliament''s trade committee.
Delaying a decision would be "a negative signal not only on the economic front, but also on the political front," he said. |
