Garment manufacturers from Nepal have joined a global alliance lobbying the World Trade Organisation (WTO) to extend a quota deadline by three years.
It is feared that the domestic industry will have to bear the onslaught of the Chinese monopoly with the end of the textile quotas in January next year. Job losses would be the result of the industries collapsing as a consequence of the regime coming to an end.
To address the situation, 91 textile and clothing producers from 49 countries across the world have come together to form a pressure group, the Global Alliance for Fair Textile Trade (GAFTT).
After a meeting in Istanbul last month, the GAFTT came up with a declaration asking WTO to hold an emergency session to discuss extending the December deadline by three years.
The Garment Association of Nepal, which is part of the alliance, has been urging the Nepalese government to endorse the campaign.
Mauritius, Bangladesh, Indonesia and other nations have joined hands and reportedly expressed solidarity with the movement.
GAFTT is also asking WTO to carry out a study on the effect the quota withdrawal would have on the economies of garment exporting countries.
Though the garments sector is a major foreign exchange earner for Nepal, the industry is not competitive due to high production costs. |
