UK:Green ‘rubbishes’ ASDA supremacy

2004-8-25

Philip Green, the BHS and Arcadia Group owner, yesterday condemned as ‘rubbish’ industry figures mentioned in the report “Move over M&S – here comes ASDA” as the biggest clothing retailer by volume.

FashionTrak''s figures showed Asda increased its volume share of the clothing and footwear market to 9.4pc for the 12 weeks to July 25, against 7.3pc for the same period last year.

M&S''s share by volume remained static at 9.1pc during the same period but when measured by value, the company remains the biggest clothing retailer, with 10.3pc of the market, down by 10.7pc.

By value, Asda increased its market share from 3pc to 3.3pc. M&S''s £4billion annual clothing sales dwarf Asda''s £1billion.

According to FashionTrak, measured by volume, BHS''s market share fell from 3pc to 2.8pc.

"That''s nonsense," said Mr Green yesterday. "For that to be true, our volumes would have to be down by 6.7pc. They weren''t. Our volumes were up by 1.6pc during that period.

"It shows how rubbish their survey is. How do they know how many units people sell unless people tell them? I''d like to meet the people who have been counting all the units going out."

He added: "Assuming my maths is any good, with £3billion of clothing sales you''re doing more volume than someone doing £1billion."

Unlike many other retailers, including M&S and Asda, Mr Green does not pay for FashionTrak''s data.

He said: "I believe that most retailers would call this meaningless data. It depends on the time of the year, the weather, what''s in fashion, when you went on Sale.

"There''s a fundamental difference between high street speciality retailers and supermarkets. Supermarkets are trying to drive their volume. It''s not their mainstream business."

Nick Lewisohn, a TNS divisional director, said: "Any [FashionTrak] data that might have appeared in the press is not the way we would have chosen to present it. We did not release it and we don''t want to comment on it."
