To establish a new economic community, the Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri gave a call to Southeast Asian countries to be more open if they were to create one to be able to compete regional powerhouses India and China.
Addressing the inaugural annual economic ministers'' meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean), Megawati said regional economic integration was "a real necessity" to establish the Asean Economic Community.
"I believe we share the view that in realising such a community, the trade liberalisation of goods and services as well as investment will play an important role," Megawati said.
Asean seeks to achieve integration of 11 industry sectors, including autos, textiles and electronics, before 2010 as part of an effort to establish the economic community.
Officials said economic integration is crucial for Asean to better compete with fast-growing economies like China and India.
At their summit in Bali last October, Asean leaders endorsed a plan to achieve a single production base and market by 2020, with a free flow of goods, services and investments in the region.
Megawati also urged Asean to improve ties with trading partners India, China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand and the European Union. |
