USA:Shakespeare develops highly durable synthetic monofilament yarns

A new highly durable monofilament under the name IsoTuff was recently introduced by Shakespeare Co., using a patented process that alters the surface properties of semi-crystalline polymers. The benefit of this structural enhancement includes increased toughness, improved wear/fatigue resistance and reduced susceptibility to fracture.

These improvements have translated into extended life for woven process fabrics. Applications include but are not limited to industrial belts, conveyors and paper machine clothing (forming, press and dryer fabrics). IsoTuff can be used as part of load bearing materials such as polyester (PET), nylons (PA), polyphenylene sulfide (PPS), and polypropylene (PP) monofilaments.

IsoTuff technology involves the use of special equipment and processes to control and optimize the structure (morphology) of semi-crystalline materials. The technology can be used to enhance a variety of high-performance thermoplastic materials, such as PA6, PA6,6, PA6,10, nylon copolymers, PPS, PP and PET.

Shakespeare’s extrusion technology uses state-of-the-art machinery in conjunction with world-class manufacturing techniques. When comparing the properties of IsoTuff nylon to conventional equivalent nylon weaving yarns, there are significant benefits noted in biaxial properties that include, but are not limited to:

• Loop strength
• Common knot strength
• Reduced Surface Energy (attributed to modification)*
• Reduced Coefficient of Friction (fiber-to-metal & fiber-to-fiber)*
• Improved Rod Guide Abrasion (similar to edge wear)

*Shakespeare has a version of IsoTuff nylon available with reduced coefficient of friction where reduced drag loads are an issue.
