Exports of cotton textiles to quota countries during the period Aug 2004 increased to US$92.38 million from $80.55 million in the previous year same period of the previous year thereby registering a growth of 14.69 percent, according to the DGCIS/CMIE reports.
During the period Jan/Aug 2004, exports to quota countries have been placed at US $1111.63mn as against $907.10mn during Jan/ Aug 2003 thereby registering percentage increase of 22.55 percent.
Total exports from India (for all commodities) has registered a growth of 10.92 percent in Rupee terms having risen to Rs. 2052.14 billion ($44.39 bn) compared to the previous years exports of Rs. 1850.17bn ($38.20bn). In dollar terms overall growth has been around 16.21 percent. The share of textile exports (chapters 50-63) in total exports was 20.74 percent in Rupee terms (Rs. 425.75bn) and 20.74 percent in Dollar terms($9.21bn).
During this period (April-December 2003), textile exports increased to $2850.99mn (Rs. 131801.17 mn) compared to $2651.32 (Rs. 128429.87mn) during the previous year same period marking an increase of 7.53 percent in dollar terms and 2.62 percent in rupee terms.
Productwise exports in the total textile basket shows that the share of cotton madeups has gone up from Rs. 4555.34 crores (US $940.41mn) in April/December 2002-2003 to Rs. 5882.33crores ($1272.41mn ) during Apr/December 2003-04 registering a growth of 29.13 percent in Rupee terms and 35.30 percent in dollar terms . In the case of Cotton Yarn and fabrics, there has however been a decline. Cotton madeups have now become the engine of growth for textile exports with a share of 44.63 percent. The share of Cotton Yarn and Fabrics in the total exports is 29.46 percent and 25.91 percent respectively.
The trends continue to reflect the shift in favour of value added exports like Madeups from commodity based exports like Yarn and Fabrics indicating a feature of vertical specialisation. |
