India:Silk Mark sets hallmark of quality Indian silks |

Silk Mark Organisation of India (SMOI), a recently created watchdog organisation for silk industry has turned out to be a boon for buyers of silk and silk products. No more will one doubt while purchasing a pure silk sari bearing a SMOI hologram.
Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu Tuesday became the third city after Bangalore and Mumbai to introduce a quality measure or a Silk Mark on the lines of the Wool Mark for woollens, for Indian silks to indicate how pure is the Kanjeevaram or the Kashmir silk you buy.
The Silk Mark, as it is being called, has been introduced by the Indian Silk Board "to protect the interests of the consumers as well as genuine manufacturers and traders in pure silk", said Central Silk Board chief P. Joy Oommen.
"In view of the prevailing competition in the market, it has become important that Indian silk is quality marked, especially with Chinese silk products entering all markets in a big way," he said.
In the next two years, SMOI plans to introduce quality marks telling the customer "the quality of the brocade used for lacing work on the sari or material, the exact width and length of silk sari, its weight and tensile strength," added T.H. Somashekar, director of the Central Silk Technological Research Institute in Bangalore.
There are two kinds of natural silk, from mulberry-eating worms and from non-mulberry eating worms.
The SMOI is also in the process of introducing the Vanya label for silk products from non-mulberry worms, officials said.
This will allow buyers to distinguish between silk from mulberry-eating worms and other kinds of natural silks.
India is one of the leading silk producers, recording 6,500 tonnes of silk products every year. |
