The coalition of textile and apparel industry groups seeking to curb imports from China filed a seventh safeguard petition on Wednesday covering imports of combed cotton yarn, which were valued at $4.5 million in 2003.
The American Manufacturing Trade Action Coalition, National Council of Textile Organizations, National Cotton Council, SEAMS, American Fiber Manufacturers Association and UNITE HERE are targeting some $1.96 billion in imports from China or continued quota restraints in an expected wave of 13 petitions covering 21 categories.
Imports of combed cotton yarn to the US rose 23.7 percent for the year ended Aug 31, on a volume basis. China controls a 2.9 percent share of US imports of combed cotton yarn.
Meanwhile, world imports, including China, of combed cotton yarn to the US stood at $162.9 million in 2003. US production of combed cotton yarn was $218.5 million last year.
