The 31st Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) awards were given away to the exporters and importers for their contribution to the Indian gem and jewelry industry and to students for their excellence in design and craftsmanship recently in Jaipur, the Pink City.
GJPEC is the apex Indian body for the gems and jewelry industry.
Presiding over the presentation ceremony was the Vice President Shri Bhairon Shekhawat and while Smt Vasundhara Raje, Honorable Chief Minister of Rajasthan, was the Guest of Honor.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Bakul Mehta, Chairman of the GJEPC informed about the companies which had highest exports in different categories like cut and polished diamonds, colored gemstones, jewelry, including financial institutions supporting the trade and students.
He said, “It is a small gesture on our part to recognize your efforts in promoting export. We are proud of you, and we believe that with your support, we will not only achieve our vision of touching exports of US $ 16 billion by 2007, but surpass it.”
Currently, the cut & polished diamonds export accounts for US$ 8.6 billion, while the Indian gem and jewelry industry posted average growth in the range 25-30% each year, he said. He called for focused marketing programs to achieve the same acknowledging that it will attract more talent and provide a stepping-stone towards making India the preferred source for gem and jewelry.
Jaipur has always been a major center for colored gemstone, added Mehta. “We have reached a stage where we need to transform Jaipur as a major center for colored gemstone jewelry,” says Bakul Mehta.
The Vice President in his address stated that the country’s gem and jewelry industry has earned world-class reputation for its products in the International market due to the untiring efforts of our entrepreneurs and the Export Promotion Council.
“This is a sector which is in great demand today in the International arena. The rate at which it is growing, is phenomenal and I am confident that it will soon form a major contributor to the foreign exchange earner of the country. I look forward to the youngsters of this industry to take it to great heights,” added Shekhawat.
Smt Raje said, “This award function will go a long way in encouraging our exporters to strive towards better export performance and contribute to the country’s prosperity. State Govt. will try to provide all possible amenities and basic infrastructure required for the setting up and development of this industry.” |
