Aimed at promoting the local clothing, textile and leather industries and saving jobs, the event will run from November 20 to 28, informs Ebrahim Patel, general secretary of the South African Clothing and Textile Workers'' Union.
The event is backed by the department of trade and industryand is the union''s third such initiative aimed at targeting job losses and boosting the industry.
He said the festival not only targeted decision- makers in industry and government but also the person on the street so that a demand for local products could be created.
Commenting on the festival, Proudly South African campaign chairperson Martin Feinstein said: "A fashion festival of this nature is imperative to encourage consumers at home to respect and support locally manufactured products."
He said the survival of the South African fashion industry depended on this support.
Mounting job losses, cheaper imports coupled with recent announcement of closure of four textile companies have raised alarm bells among the industry at large. |
