With the ten member nations of ASEAN entering in to a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in a decade farmers are likely to accrue major benefits, says National Farmers Federation, which has welcomed news that negotiations for the deal will start next year.
ASEAN will bring close to half a billion people together, which include major export partners Indonesia and Malaysia.
Peter Corish NFF President says it''s too early to put a dollar figure on the possible benefits for agriculture, but there''s plenty to gain.
"Well, certainly our textile products, both cotton and wool, would benefit greatly from a successful agreement with ASEAN," he said.
"Malaysia is our fourth largest market for horticulture. The dairy industry, beef industry, grains industry, live animal exports, could all significantly benefit from successful negotiations with the ASEAN countries." |
