Force-sensing fabric firm ElekSen to launch a new Bluetooth fabric keyboard and joystick for PDAs and mobile phones at the beginning of next year.
The Buckinghamshire-based company currently has on the market keyboards for the SPV Smart Phone offered by the UK company Orange in Europe, and another keyboard remarketed by Logitech for Palm handhelds.
The new devices are designed to be used by a wide range of device brands. They would be re-branded and bundled with specific devices.
The input devices are made from a special ‘electronic fabric’ technology that can sense input on three axes: vertical, horizontal and amount of pressure.
The fabric keyboard, said Robin Shephard, the firm’s recently appointed Chief Executive Officer, can be reconfigured and will also act as a writing pad, a feature with the Far East market in mind.
The firm is in discussion with several Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and mobile operators to get them to take the keyboard with their PDAs.
The new strategy is to have a keyboard that is compatible with as many types of handheld devices as possible, said Shephard.
