The Ellerslie Fashions in the Field was announced, and it was none other than Mt Maunganui fashion designer Toni Gudsel who burst into tears just as a gust of wind nearly blew her hat off as she was handed the keys to a Mercedes-Benz C180 K Sports Coupe worth over $64,000.
"I just can''''t believe it," she told the crowd at the Mercedes Derby Day today at Ellerslie Racecourse in Auckland.
Di Goldsworthy, a consultant to Fashions in the Field, clapped and said it was the best result in years.
"We have a real winner, not a professional model ... looks at her elation. The joy is what the competition is about."
Mrs Gudsel, made a last minute entry as a support person to friend Fiona McSoriley, who had last month won the top fashion prize at Riccarton racecourse in Christchurch.
"I didn''''t have time to design anything for myself. This is all off the rack."
Gudsel''''s winning outfit was an embroidered brown silk jacket and skirt from Sabines, a soft pink hat from Urban Turbans, shoes from Andrea Biani, and a decorated bag from Roselles of Tauranga.
Selected from among 215 entries, it was stressed that the wearer would be deemed the prize winner to dissuade designers who in past competitions have used models to snare themselves the loot. |
