Brazil:Brazilian footwear exports up 17% to $1.806bn in 2004

The Brazilian Footwear Association (Abicalçados) on Tuesday announced that Brazil''s footwear exports rose 17 percent in 2004 from 2003 to $1.806 billion from $1.549 billion.

The Brazilian footwear industry has performed best export since the $1.846 billion of 1993.

The shoe export revenue in December alone totaled $175 million, up 20 percent on the $146 million of the same month in 2003. Compared with the $137 million of November 2004 there was a 28 percent increase.

Abicalçados predicts a 15 percent increase in exports in 2005 but informs that the figure does depend on the exchange rate.

Abicalçados Vice-President Heitor Klein said, "We can''t forget that this income in 2004 is the result of orders made over several months. The problem will be greater from now on when the new sales season starts."

The association forecasts that if the real does not weaken exports could reduce 10 percent compared with 2004.
