The big apple will enjoy a “no sales tax” on clothing and shoes costing less than $110 will start Jan. 31 and last through Feb. 6.
Since 1997, the state has been holding this kind of week.
The 4.25 percent sales tax will stand suspended within the state and eight other counties in Western New York.
The state''s sales tax would revert back to 4 percent from its current rate of 4.25 percent.
New York State currently faces a $4.2 billion deficit and lawmakers are unlikely to relinquish either source of revenue.
Retailers have been devising several strategies to entice customers to their stores and thus hear the cash registers ringing, week long. But the state needed more money and decided to reinstate the sales tax in 2003 and schedule one-week long sales tax holidays, the last of which starts at the end of this month. |
