Garment manufacturers and exporters association (BGMEA) has started a campaign to get duty free access to the markets of United States. 14 least developed countries (LDC) including Bangladesh are eagerly awaiting the outcome of the bill titled "Tariff Relief Assistance for Developing Economies Act 2005", placed in the US Congress on February 26, 2005 according market preference for them.
In a press release, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers & Exports Association (BGMEA) informed Sunday, that its representatives met envoys of Afghanistan, Nepal and Bhutan in Dhaka as part of their planned campaign to discuss with 13 LDCs to mobilise their support to the bill.
"All the countries involved should work together as passage of the bill is a very tough and lengthy process," BGMEA president Annisul Huq was quoted to have told the envoys. The envoys assured the BGMEA of necessary support.
Nepal, Bhutan, Cambodia, Laos, Kiribati, Afghanistan, East Timor, Yemen, Samoa, Solomon Islands, the Maldives, Vanuatu and Tuvalu are the countries to benefit from the passage of the bill. BGMEA plans to call representative of private companies from the countries in question at a conference in Dhaka to mobilize support for the same.
A few US senators and Congressmen would also be invited to take a closer look at the RMG industry of Bangladesh, the sources said. Meanwhile, it is learnt that BGMEA has appointed lobbyists in the United States to help move the bill.
A full duty waiver of 16% percent currently being charge on apparel and garment exports will bring about a "revolution" in the country''s apparel industry and help alleviate poverty in the LDCs. The US authorities have already awarded the market preference to 33 sub-Saharan and Caribbean countries out of 49 in the world''s poor-country club (the group of LDCs). |
