India:Textile Minister Vaghela informs appproval for setting
up five hi-tech weaving parks |

 In a written reply to a starred question in Rajya Sabha today, the Union Textile Minister Shankersinh Vaghela said that the Government has approved setting up of five hi-tech weaving parks in the country.
He informed that the Government is encouraging establishing hi-tech weaving parks involving modernized powerlooms through assistance under various schemes.
Throught the establishment of parks with modern weaving and preparatory machines, the powerloom workers are expected to gain better job opportunities and conducive working environment.
In separate reply about National Textile Corporation (NTC) he conveyed that 26 NTC mills were closed in 2004and since 1997, 66 mills pulled down their shutters. The year 2002 saw a record 31 mills close their operations.
The Minister stated that the techno-economic viability studies indicated 66 mills as unviable and BIFR approved the closure of these mills.
Replying to another query about cloth import, Vaghela replied that the import of used clothing has increased from Rs 174.6 million in 1998-99 to Rs 2.78 billion in 2003-04, a 15-fold growth.
He contended that cloth imports compete unfairly with the domestic garment industry, with the downstream spinning and weaving industry also getting affected as buyers shy away from purchasing local fabrics.
However, Government has already put in place import restrictions on used clothes bringing them under the purview of the Restricted List of Imports. |
