India:First Regional AD Control Conference held at Leh |

For the first time, Regional Conference on Animal Disease (AD) Control in J&K was held at Leh organized by Sheep and Animal Husbandry Department.
The Joint Secretary Animal Husbandry Government of India, Ms Neeta Chaudhary was the Chief Guest while Secretary, Animal Husbandry Department J&K Dr M. Deen and other senior officers of the State besides district officers attended the Conference.
It was stated in the Conference that nearly 4.80 lacs Sheep and Goats population is in Leh district and 2.40 lacs wool and 11.50 lacs Kgs of mutton is being produced in the district.
The District Sheep Husbandry Officer, Leh Dr Khateeb said that nearly 0.58 lacs kgs of mutton is being imported from outside the district to meet the requirement of the market demand annually.
He said a Pashmina Dehairing plant has been set up at Leh with the assistance from UNDP, Hill Council and Ministry of Textiles at a cost of Rs.8.25 crores for the benefit of Pashmina producers of Leh district.
During the Conference, the speakers highlighted the ways and means to prevent cattle from various diseases.
