Singapore (October 18, 2005) – In an increasingly complex and global textile supply chain, controlling color has become an absolute necessity, but also a great challenge for textile manufacturers. Only companies that adapt and evolve to meet this challenge will gain a sustainable competitive advantage. In a press conference at ITMA Asia 2005 in Singapore, key executives at GretagMacbeth shared their vision for the textile industry, highlighting the essential role of seamless color control across production supply chains and industries in helping textile manufacturers ensure quality for their customers
“Brand owners and retailers understand the power of color to make or break their brands,” said Jan-Paul van Maaren, vice president and general manager of GretagMacbeth’s Color & Appearance Business Unit. “Historic color know-how and a cross-industry understanding of color control uniquely position our company to help textile manufacturers manage this essential task.”
During the presentation, Ken Boyle, executive vice president of worldwide sales at GretagMacbeth, outlined three key drivers for change in the textile industry:
First, color control has shifted from textile manufacturers to brand owners. With multiple suppliers working in multiple locations, and sometimes continents, brand owners and retailers are now scrupulously monitoring color quality themselves.
Second, to help monitor color control effectively and efficiently, brand owners and manufacturers have turned to digital color control solutions. These color control devices have an added benefit of connecting disparate players in the textile supply chain, enhancing communication and efficiency, while reducing costly errors.
“Globalization and intense competition among brands are at the root of these drivers,” said Boyle. “Managing color within brand-owners’ discrete textile supply chains is a requirement for doing business today, and textile manufacturers who do not have color control systems in place may soon be left behind.”
Third, controlling color is fast becoming an enterprise-wide requirement. As color continues to be a key differentiator for brands, the industry can expect a push from brand owners to control color across their many product supply chains. Textile manufacturers will not only be asked to ensure precise, consistent color in their fabrics, but also across product lines and in print ads, in-store displays, and even online and printed catalogs.
