Reducing share of US exports market and the loss of increasing volume of local market to imports created a tough challenge for Mexican textile and apparel industry in 2005.
Besides imports, export volumes in cotton fibre and yarns registered decline witht the sole exception of cotton fibre recording growth on both fronts; exports and imports.
Imports in the lightweight (less than 200 g/m2) cotton fabrics reached US $101.38 million, registering 11.4 percent expansion. Exports of the same product shot up to $15.014 million, recording 317.4 percent growth.
Imports of the heavyweight (over 200 g/m2) cotton fabrics recorded growth of 4 percent to $503.34 million, and exports grew 26.2 percent to $50.40 million.
United States of America took the top position as the largest trading partner in cotton fabrics.
