The trend is reversing it seems as Bangladesh has started exporting apparels to China.
Sources revealed that some of the Bangladeshi exporters who participated in the 2005 China Export and Import International Trade Fair in Kunming, Yunnan Province, picked orders worth US $2 million.
Fazlul Haque, President, Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association considers China to be a significant market.
Products prices for Chinese markets were the same as that for Western markets, he informed.
He also called for the government to aid exporters to rent display centres in Chinese cities so as to draw more consumers.
He advised that Bangladeshi commercial banks should establish their branches in China so as to facilitate the dealings.
Experts believe that Bangladesh venturing into Chinese markets will lower the prospects of the US Congress, offering duty and quota free access of their products.
However, Haque claims that Bangladesh should not be disqualified from getting duty-and-quota-free access into the US market under the pretext of its exports to China.
Bangladesh earns over $6 billion a year through apparel export, especially from European Union and US markets.
Further, it is the second largest export earner for the country with full potential to top soon.
