China : Chongqing - yarn & fabric products export up in 2005

Chongqing Customs published statistics of Chongqing's foreign trade in 2005 in recent days: exports in 2005 amounted to US$2.52 billion, and the increase rate hit 20.6 percent, exceeding the target set up at the beginning of 2005.

Total imports and exports reached US$4.29 billion, ranking No. 6 among 12 western provinces and cities. Owing to the bigger increase rate of exports compared with imports, trade surplus in 2005 were US$750 million.

Electromachinery products, mainly depending on automobiles, motorcycles and parts, universal power machinery, were still the main force of exports of made-in-Chongqing products. In 2005, exports of electromachinery products in Chongqing amounted to US$1.57 billion, up by 27.9 percent and accounting for 62.3 percent of total exports of the City.

In light industry, exports of yarn, fabric and products were not affected strongly by the restriction of EU and American against Chinese textile products, and reached US$150 million, up by 14.6 percent compared with 2004.

But as for the downstream products like garments and clothing accessories, exports of them fell by 11.4 percent compared with 2004 and were only US$38.713 million, and Chinese shoes suffered from the same situation, exports were down by 45.1 percent to US$6.396 million.

Under the promotion of strategy of market and products diversification, export market structure of products made in Chongqing tended to be reasonable, and total exports to new markets of EU and America had exceed that at Asian market which was ever been the only market for made-in-Chongqing products.

Statistics showed that exports of Chongqing to Asia market were US$1.167 billion, up by 1.01 percent compared with 2004, but to EU, North American, Latin American and African markets were US$548 million, US$356 million, US$212 million and US$199 million respectively, up by 5.14 percent, 56.45 percent, 95.38 percent and 20.34 percent respectively.
