China : Nationwide videophone meeting on cotton in Beijing |

On September 28, 2006, a nationwide videophone meeting on review of 2005 cotton production was held for analysis of new year cotton situation and the arrangement of 2006 cotton production.
The participants of the meeting were from seven governmental sectors; they were the State Development Planning Commission, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Agriculture, State Administration of Industry and Commerce, State Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision and Agriculture Development Bank.
The meeting pointed out that 2005 cotton production made a better achievement, farmers income increased, textile industries continued a faster development, cotton market showed relevantly steady.
The procured price for 2005 cotton rose 20.4 percent from the previous year, farmers’ income therefore increased by 13.2 billion Yuan.
In 2006, China cotton planting area expanded, with normal climate, cotton production would be expected to be higher. Textile production and export would continue to show an up trend, but it is still a hard task to arrange all the work in cotton production.
The meeting stressed that China’s cotton market would run into a situation for a long time in which demand would surpass supply.
In order to enhance the competitive strength of the whole textile industry, more attention should be taken towards protecting farmers’ benefits, making effects to promote domestic cotton production, adjusting and squaring the relationship among cotton production, circulation, consumption amid upper and lower chains.
The meeting required all relevant departments and trade groups to strengthen information guidance and propaganda to lead nationwide firms in cotton business to correctly analyze the situation of cotton production and market.
The Agriculture Development Banks around the country should rationally distribute financing stations to support new cotton procuration. Meanwhile Government departments would severely strike against illegal activities in cotton business.
The meeting reinforced that the reform in cotton circulation system should be further deepened, and cotton marketing system should be further improved.
The Government would make more efforts in attracting investment to support the development of local cotton production and increase cotton productivity and quality. |
