The textile industry of Pakistan has been playing a pivotal role to drive national economy with its significant contribution to the industrial production, employment generation and foreign exchange earnings. The textile and garment sector is undergoing tremendous change in the light of globalization and current economic challenges.
The demand for Pakistani textile products is increasing in the international markets and the industry is securing large orders among its regional competitors. The export of textile and garment sector stood at US$ 10.3 billion in 2009-10. In this context Mr. Jawed Tabba, Managing Director of Lucky Textile Mills (based in Karachi, Pakistan) stated that since last six months, the industry is registering monthly growth of around US$ 450 million in exports, out of which US$ 200 million is the increase to the real price factor. This increase is mainly attributed to the over all improvement in quality control due to which world’s leading retail stores are now buying textile and garment products being manufactured in Pakistan.
The quality of Pakistani towel and bed wear products is considered best amongst the products being manufactured by its neighboring countries. Realizing the importance of value added products, the local industry is moving towards modernization of manufacturing facilities by importing state-of-the-art machinery and technology. Textile machinery worth US$ 349.07 million was imported in 2009-10 by the local manufacturers. The Government of Pakistan is also encouraging the modernization of local industry by exempting duties on the import of textile machinery to penetrate the foreign markets with high quality value added products.
The textile industry is also improving and upgrading the current production facilities with the import of parts and accessories to meet the increasing export orders in time. More than 4000 textile related industrial units are working in the country out of which 90% of large units use latest machinery and imported parts while small units use second hand machinery and depend on the local parts & accessories. In this regard, the Ministry of Industries and Production has taken numerous measures for technological advancements and skill development in order to increase the exports of textile made-ups that meet the international standards.
Pakistan textile industry is seeking new avenues of business in Technical Textiles to gain edge in exports over its regional competitors. The local manufacturers are realizing the significance of technical textiles and are taking various initiatives to upgrade their production facilities for production of specialized fabrics that offer higher returns in export markets.
The increasing imports of textile and garment machinery substantiate the need for exhibitions such as MEGATECH, which is a comprehensive platform for display of the latest and innovative technology for the textile and garment industry.
9th Edition of the International Machinery Exhibition of Garment & Textile Technology – MEGATECH Pakistan 2011, is scheduled from 3-5 March, 2011 at the Expo Centre Lahore, which is known as the heart of textile hub.
