Pure cotton fabric imports of Thailand has increased sharply in recent times due to which apparel exports including denim apparel has consolidated.
Thailand's imports of lightweight pure cotton fabrics (HS 5208, not more than 200g/m? were up 44% in baht terms in April from the same month last year, while imports of heavyweight fabrics (HS 5209, more than 200g/m? rose 34% at the same time.
In the January-April period, the same imports increased by 20% and 24%, respectively.
This surge in cotton fabric imports reflects a rebound in apparel sales to foreign countries after the decline experienced in 2002.
According to Thai Garment Manufacturers Association, shipments could be up 5% to 6% this year to about US$5.15 billion.
Textile exports, including sales of cotton yarns, are also rapidly rising at the same time.
