Ink-jet printer gets GOTS label |

FREIBURG – German-based textile printer Textil Fab has received the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) for its ink-jet textile printing process – one of the first textile printers to achieve this certification. The company says that although being GOTS certified now allows it to supply and label printed fabrics in small and medium yardages to organic fashion specialists, ink-jet printing itself is a good environmentally-friendly option. “It uses up to 50 per cent less water, fewer chemicals and less energy than conventional silk screen or rotary printing. The time required from design to printed fabric is also significantly shorter. This makes it ideal for fast and cost-effective collection development,” claimed Textil Fab owner and managing director Andreas Uhlmann. “More than 150 printing operations have been certified to GOTS already,“ GOTS technical officer Marcus Bruegel told Ecotextile News, “there was a lot of demand for ink jet printing technology on fabrics in Europe especially for small and medium batches in the past few years.” Textil Fab will display a range of fabrics at the Munich Fabric Start as well as in the Organic Selection Forum. The company says it can now print almost any fabric today, from the finest silk to coarsely woven slub linen and, naturally, organic cotton. Preparations are also in progress to print pure linen, ramie, hemp and nettle fabrics. The fabrics are finished at IVN-certified workshops in Baden-Wuerttemberg. Uhlmann is determined to keep all processes from purchasing to finishing within the local region or, at least, within Germany.”"Obviously we source the fabrics overseas, but we do try to keep the supply chain as short as possible.”
