A new technique called ‘Non-woven wool’ eliminates two steps in the manufacturing process for wool is expected to open new markets for wool growers.
This new wool technique doesn't need to be spun or woven. Dr Len Stephens, Chief Executive of Australian Wool Innovation, says it will provide an alternative to polar fleece, which is made essentially from recycled plastic bottles.
"The non-woven technology," he said, "is used to make any kind of soft padding. It's a replacement for what you might call fleece products, the traditional cotton windcheaters that people see that are fleecy lined products, inner winter wear, a whole range of products that could be useful."
