Pakistan : 70s Costume Trend Back In Fashion |

Fashion designers believe the prevalent trend in wearing is like that in the 70’s as today men are more into fitted shirts and women into bellbottoms with short fitted tops.They say the city’s trend is in conformity with the western style.
Fashion designer Aasia Saail, who was one of the four nominees for Lux Style awards given in March 2002 in Karachi, said, “Macho attires are no more in fashion.” She said the latest fashion was that of the 70’s with slight modifications.“Today men’s wardrobes have fitted and structured shirts. The hippy era of the 70’s is back in style,” she said.Ms Saail said bellbottoms and short, fitted tops are popular among teenaged girls. “Women’s costumes rely on asymmetric styles,” she said. She said every fashion spell lasts for at least three years.
“The first year, a trend gets introduced; the second year, people enjoy it maximum; and the third year, its starts fading away,” she said.Another fashion designer from Defence, Amir Khan, said the fashion community counts a lot on the younger generation because it happily follows new trends. “Mature people and the aged go for sober looks they are accustomed to,” Mr Khan said.“The 70’s double slits in suiting have once again started charming fashion fanciers. Now boot-fit trousers and pointed collar shirts are in demand. Women go for embroided and simple kurtas and bellbottom jeans,” he said.Boutique owners dealing in western outfits say straight trousers and fitted shirts are in vogue. But suiting, especially readymade, doesn’t have slits at the back unlike the 70’s. “Elderly customers do not accept a change in their patterns readily,” they say.
A boutique owner, Gul Hasan, said all fashion trends are imported from the west. “People wear what they like. There are no 70’s or 60’s. It’s only a matter of liking,” he said.A foreign-based Pakistani fashion designer, Kashif Khalid, said since art of textile designing addresses a large number of fashion-followers through the mainstream fashion taskmasters, outfits with a modern look must carry a print of identity because attire invigorate the lifestyle. He said he believes street fashion is popular these days. “Designers are more into designs which appeal to teenagers and younger people for a long-term relationship,” he said.
