Philippines : Garment, Textile Exports Surged 14% In July

July garment and textile exports from the Philippines climbed 14 per cent year-on-year to $309 million with exports for the seven month period up 6.5 per cent to $1.7 billion from last year.

Figures from the Ministry of Trade and Industry released Tuesday showed total apparel exports jumped 64 per cent to $279m last month with total earnings in the seven months to July reaching $1.48bn.

Trade and Industry Secretary Manuel Roxas said textile exports in July rose 45 per cent year-on-year to $82m and attributed the hike to improvements in technology and labour skills over the past few years.

Last week, data from the nation’s Garments and Textile Export Board showed garment and textile exports rose 5.1 per cent in the first half of 2003 to $1.39bn from $1.32bn last year.
